In a lead article in the New York Times' July 5 Science section, headlined, "Straight, Gay or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited," Times writer Benedict Carey reported that an upcoming study "casts doubt on whether true bisexuality exists, at least in men." In suggesting that men who claim a
bisexual sexual orientation are liars, the Times relies heavily on a single study whose senior researcher has a career marked by ethics controversies and eugenics proposals--facts that were not presented to readers . . . Read the rest of the article here

Open Letter to New York Times

Dear PUBLIC EDITOR - NEW YORK TIMES:

I am ashamed for you to have been so rash and hasty as to run that "Gay, Bi or Lying" article without further serious examination of the harmful potential of such actions. While newspapers are black and white themselves such complex issues such as bisexuality are rarely so. As we say at the Bi MEN NETWORK - now with over 1/4 million active adult male members with us today worldwide - it is merely

INFINITE SHADES OF GRAY.
Bisexuality is a continuum of gay bisexuals to bi bisexuals to straight bisexuals. You hardly ever if NEVER hear from the straight bisexuals who are often swingers or have an infrequent tryst or threesome.

The bisexuals YOU DO HEAR of tend to be the gay bisexuals and likely those were very well represented in this very small study sample. Also gay bisexuals tend to be the ones - like ME - that you hear from as they are more open and willing to come forward - after so many decades since STONEWALL have gone by with a bit more acceptance.

The TIMES should be ashamed of itself and owes an apology to ALL bisexuals who represent an all but silent sexual minority. Pieces like this this do nothing to help bisexuals come out of their closets.

This sort of REDUCTIONIST thinking you report in this "study" is absurd. As Freud who spent a lifetime studying human sexuality concluded we are all bisexuals. If you and your staff and readers would be honest - they would all admit to at least some BISEXUAL impulses in their lifetimes - if not one
bisexual "fling" at some moment in time in their lives. As Heinlein portrayed in the future in his "Stranger in a Strange Land" we will likely all one day "happen" to be bisexual and it will no longer be any big deal whether one "happens" to be gay, bi, transgendered or heterosexual.

All I can surmise is that it is Summer and even the folks at the New York Times take it easy during the summer rushing off to Fire Island or the Hamptons or what not and did not THINK this piece through or fully evaluate its implications or probe the study's author and his sad reputation. Or did you just want to cause this uproar and boost circulation and get some attention? Well, we all appreciate a little attention now and then. Long ago I surmised with the Bi MEN NETWORK - just spell our name right - you did not spell the bisexual male name right this time. Shame on you. Please do better by us bisexuals next time. We are out there! So is the TRUTH.
